Water Sports in Rudra Prayag

Water Sports in Rudra Prayag

Not long ago, Rudra Prayag was a small hamlet built around the confluence of Rivers Mandakini and Alakananda. Pilgrims on way to the holy town of Kedarnath and Badrinath not only visited this small village, many came here just to have a dip at the confluence and offer puja at the Rudranath temple.. Today however, the picture has changed drastically. Not all of them who come here are interested in attaining virtue; a large section of them also comes here to have some worldly fun. Indeed, Rudra Prayag has now become a hub for adventure sports such as river rafting and kayaking.

Kayaking in River Mandakini

Both Rivers Mandakini and Alakananda are suitable for water sports. Among the two, River Mandakini is especially suitable for kayaking. However, this river is not for the novice. There are many grade 2, grade 3 and grade 4 rapids along the entire length of the river and one requires quite a bit of expertise to negotiate them. In fact, there are quite a few grade 4 rapids near Rudraprayag, which may pose some real difficulty and so newcomers should think twice before venturing alone on this river. The best time is from the month of October to April.  Rest of the time the river becomes too violent for any kinds of water sports.
